What is the difference between manual and automatic?
Manual car
A clutch, a brake and an accelerator. You change gear yourself with the clutch pedal and gear lever, and you must use the clutch when changing gear, moving off and stopping.
Automatic car
A brake and an accelerator only. The car changes gear for you, up as the speed rises and down as it slows, so you need less coordination and usually reach test standard in fewer lessons.
If you are in a rush for your licence because of school, work or other reasons, an automatic car is often the quickest route. You can always take lessons in a manual car later and test again for a manual licence.
Your licence and your test
Automatic licence
Pass in an automatic car and you can drive automatic cars only. To drive a manual car you need a separate test. Pass in a manual and you can drive both.
Your automatic test
The procedure is exactly the same as a manual test. But there is no risk of stalling or clutch struggles, and a turn in the road or hill start is much easier.
Can an automatic stall?
If the engine works properly and you drive sensibly, it should not. Stalling is usually down to faulty sensors, a vacuum leak or intake or fuel problems.
Driving a manual takes more practice, so lessons can take longer and cost more. If you pass in a manual, you can drive both types of car, which is its main advantage.
